Dustin Lineback walked on to the East Carolina football team in 2007 after transferring from Brevard (N.C.) College. During his first season at ECU, Lineback did not experience game action, but was a valuable member of the scout team.
A year later, Lineback was one of the most pleasant surprises for the special teams and defensive units. He played in all 14 games and started two. He finished the year as the team leader in special-teams tackles with nine. The following year Dustin was selected as a Victors Club (performance-based weekly award) member of the special teams.
Following the departure of head coach Skip Holtz and all three starting linebackers from the 2009 team, Lineback has stepped into a much bigger role as a senior. At the end of the 2010 spring semester, new head coach Ruffin McNeill promoted Dustin to full-scholarship status.
Dustin Lineback’s rapid development and tireless work ethic have made him one of the best walk-on stories in recent East Carolina program history. This season, with a new staff and 12 defensive players making their first-career starts, Lineback’s leadership has been invaluable. He has been selected as a defensive or special teams captain in five of the 12 weeks of the season.
