Phil Swanson
Western Michigan
Nominated by Bill Cubit
Masters Program

Phil Swanson is an all-encompassing student athlete that has not only excelled on the field but also in the classroom. His extracurricular activities, in pursuit of a successful career after college, include writing for the student news paper, contributing to the New York Times as a blogger, interning for both the Kalamazoo Gazette newspaper and WWMT which is a CBS affiliate. The fact that he has been able to do all this while being an athlete, full time student and Academic All-American shows that he is worthy of this award. The 2009 season gave Phil a chance to step up at a time when his team needed him the most. Phil switched from an offensive guard position to right tackle due to injuries and the inability of some members on the team to contribute at the level needed to be successful. His efforts allowed the offensive line to stay intact and helped produce a 1,000 yard rusher.
